10 years after Martin Shaw turned the beloved Inspector Gently novels into a hit BBC One TV series, filming has begun on two final feature-length episodes. Back in action one last time will be Shaw as the eponymous inspector, who is tested like never before just as he winds down his career. In the first of two films - Gently Liberated - the inspector and his trusted allies Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) and Coles (Lisa McGrillis) are brought in to investigate a possible "miscarriage of justice". However, their final case in Gently and the New Age has the Met's new Special Investigations Squad boss Lister bringing in the inspector to investigate high levels of corruption within the force. Both of these mini-movies will be set in 1970, as the women's liberation movement and the rise of the Conservative Party bring clashing values to Britain.

本片改编自著名作家五味康佑的同名历史小说《薄樱记》。 日本元禄年间，丹下典膳（山本耕史 饰）出身旗本家庭，世居江户，父亲很早就死了，和母亲以及一些仆人一起生活，家境并不宽裕。典膳一心只知习武，年纪轻轻就已经是江户城中第一高手、一刀流道场的门面。外加为人质朴又懂得变通，很受高层器重，是侍奉德川幕府的旗本，同时也是一刀流道场武艺最出色的剑豪。他在妻子长尾千春（柴本幸 饰）出身门第显赫，出于政治目的与下级武士丹下家联姻，但是和典膳的感情倒是真诚。有一次火宅中，千春不幸被歹人侵犯而失节。典膳为了保护千春的名誉瞒下此事，被千春的哥哥斩去左臂，因此失去武士身份，沦为浪人。之后又不得已与好友剑客堀部安兵卫（高桥和也 饰）对决。
